CORAF is actively committed to strengthening the role of women in science, with a particular focus on agriculture. As part of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, CORAF is organizing a webinar under the theme “Women in Scientific Leadership in West and Central Africa: Their Inspiring Stories”. This event will take place on February 20, 2024, from 3pm to 5pm GMT, on Zoom.

This international day aims to highlight the importance of women and girls in science and technology, while advocating greater participation and leadership. For Dr. Mariame MAIGA, CORAF’s Regional Gender and Social Development Advisor, “Unlocking the potential of African agriculture lies in the empowerment and leadership of women and youth in agricultural research and development systems.” This belief guides CORAF’s ongoing commitment to various projects and programs aimed at investing in women and youth.

The webinar will bring together several women leaders in research such as Prof. Aichatou ASSOUMANE, Director General of Research and Innovation of the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation of the Republic of Niger; Dr. Angela Maria MORENO, President of the CORAF Board of Directors; Prof. Aïssatou Dramé YAYE, President; Prof. Mauricette OUALI N’GORAN, Vice-President and Prof. Fonteh Florence ANYANGWE, Secretary General of the CORAF Scientific and Technical Committee.

The main aim of this virtual meeting is to share the achievements of African women researchers in agricultural research, and to encourage young girls to embrace careers in agricultural science. Through inspiring interventions, panelists will share their success stories and discuss the specific challenges facing women in agricultural research.
