Expert Summary

Symphorien Agbahoungba is a plant breeder and biotechnologist and mainly works on legumes crops including Cowpea, Bambara groundnut, Pigeon pea, Kerstings groundnut, Common bean, Horse gram and Maize. He has been coordinator of the legumes breeding program of the Laboratory of Applied Ecology, Faculty of Agronomic Sciences, University of Abomey-Calavi in Benin for the last 12 years. He has been an active member of the West African Cowpea Consortium and organized its annual meeting in 2019 in Benin. He is member of the African Orphan Crops Consortium (AOOC), the African Plant Breeding Association, Gender-Responsive Researcher Equipped for Agricultural Transformation (GREAT), and the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM). He holds a PhD in plant breeding and biotechnology from Makerere University (Uganda), MSc. Degree and Engineer Agronomist Diploma from Benin; he has been an alumnus of the UC Davis African Plant Breeding Academy, laureate of the one planet fellowship Program of AWARD on agriculture and climate change. His interest is in the development of improved varieties that are resistant to the major biotic and abiotic stress, and high yielding under favorable environments, as well as, under restricted growing conditions. He has coordinated the implementation of many research projects in Western and Eastern Africa and has published 64 scientific articles, book chapters, conferences papers and data sets.
